Making the Most of Your Baby’s First Birthday Celebration at Rosie Richards Studio

By Rosie Richards Studio – Brooklyn, NY

A cake smash session is one of the most joyful milestones we get to capture at Rosie Richards Studio. It’s a sweet, silly, and often hilarious way to celebrate your baby turning one. But behind every adorable frosting-covered face is some thoughtful preparation that ensures the day goes smoothly for both you and your little one.

Here’s how to get ready so your baby can enjoy every sprinkle, splash, and giggle – and so we can capture every moment beautifully.

Here’s how to get ready for your big day:

1. Make Sure Your Baby Is Well-Rested

The single most important thing you can do before a cake smash session? Sleep.
Whether it’s a good night’s rest or a solid nap before the session, a well-rested baby is far more likely to be happy, curious, and engaged. Tired babies are quicker to fuss – and while we can still capture great moments if they do, being refreshed gives us the best start.

2. Test for Allergies Before the Session

Because your baby will be eating cake (and possibly frosting!) for the first time, it’s essential to test for allergies in advance. Offer them a small taste of the cake flavors or ingredients you plan to use well before the shoot day.

And please – always tell your photographer about any allergies (even if you think they might not be relevant). Never assume it’s safe. This simple step ensures we avoid any scary situations and keep the session fun and stress-free.

3. Every Baby Reacts Differently — And That’s Okay

Some babies dive right into the cake like it’s the greatest thing they’ve ever tasted. Others gently poke it with one finger. And yes – some cry and want nothing to do with it. The same goes for the bath portion of the session.

Here’s the thing: every reaction is part of their unique story.
If your little one bursts into tears or refuses the cake, it’s not the end of the world. In fact, it makes for a priceless memory you can laugh about in the years to come. Imagine telling them at age 18: “You hated your first birthday cake and wouldn’t even touch it!” or “You couldn’t stop eating it — we had to take it away!”

Your baby’s personality – whether bold, curious, shy, or sensitive – will shine through in the photos, and that’s what makes them truly special.

4. The Session Runs on Your Baby’s Schedule

At Rosie Richards Studio, we don’t set a hard limit on outfit changes or a rigid shooting schedule. Why? Because each baby is different.

Some are ready to switch outfits multiple times, while others are happiest sticking to one. Some enjoy long stretches of activity, others need more breaks. We read your baby’s cues and design the session around what works best for them.

You’ll also have access to a curated selection of outfits in the studio, so you can try different looks without the stress of shopping or overpacking.

5. Parents Play a Big Role

Cake smash sessions are very hands-on for parents. You’ll be moving your baby into position, helping them explore the cake, and keeping them engaged with smiles, songs, and silly faces.

At this stage, babies are deeply connected and bonded with their parents. Your presence makes them feel secure. My job is to capture the silly, sweet, and even serious expressions that happen between those moments. We work together to create magic.

6. Breaks Are Always Welcome

We understand that babies have limits, and we work with that. Breaks for cuddles, snacks, or a sip of water are completely normal and encouraged. These pauses can actually create beautiful, intimate moments that become some of parents’ favorite shots.

Final Thoughts

A cake smash is more than just a baby eating cake. It’s a celebration of their first year of life, their growing personality, and your journey as a family. Whether they smile, cry, or make the most gloriously messy face you’ve ever seen, the images will be an honest, heartfelt reflection of your baby’s milestone.

At Rosie Richards Studio, we embrace whatever the day brings – because in the end, the “perfect” cake smash isn’t about the cake at all.

It’s about love, laughter, and the little human you’re raising.
